Stone for all your building and landscaping needs.
Founded in 1883, the Ozark Southern Stone quarry was originally named Eureka Stone Co. and owned by an early Eureka Springs postmaster, Benjamin J. Rosewater. Rosewater and the Eureka Springs former governor, Powell Clayton, joined forces to improve Eureka Springs’ infrastructures and city planning. Using limestone from the quarry, Rosewater constructed Crescent Hotel and Eureka Springs Library.
Rosewater’s contribution towards constructing crucial buildings in Eureka Springs created a positive catalyst impact on the city’s economy. Decades later, Eureka Stone Co. transitioned to Ozark Southern Stone and has been providing local and regional services for over 10 years.
For the construction of Crescent Hotel, erected in 1886 and still stands, Powell Clayton and architect Isaac Taylor of Frisco Railroad use limestone from the Ozark Southern Stone quarry. Transported in special wagons, the heavy pieces of limestone required a team of specialists from Ireland to assist and advise in the construction, cutting and fitting of the limestone.
The leader of the Ireland team, Mr. O’Shawnessy, recalled “Throughout the many years of [my] stone working career, [I have] never encountered a stone with such density and quality as ‘White River Limestone’. O’Shawnessy successfully predicted that the limestone will become a popular construction product in the future and further stated that because of its unique characteristics, the 18” thick walls of the Crescent Hotel would withstand the destructive forces of time and retain it’s original beauty for years to come.
